Hair oiling is one of the oldest habits in our homes. Our mothers and grandmothers did it every week, and it is still one of the simplest ways to look after your hair and scalp. But a lot of people are not sure how much oil to use, how long to leave it, or how often to do it.
This guide covers the basics so you can build a routine that actually fits your life.
Why people oil their hair
A good hair oil routine is mostly about care and comfort:
- It helps hair feel softer and look smoother.
- It adds a layer of moisture to dry ends.
- A gentle scalp massage feels relaxing and is a good way to slow down after a long day.
Results are different for everyone, and oil is not a quick fix. Think of it as a regular habit, like brushing your teeth, rather than a one-time treatment.
Step 1: Choose an oil that suits you
Look for a hair oil with a simple, clear ingredient list and clear directions on the pack. If you have never used a product before, do a patch test first: put a small amount on the inner side of your wrist or behind your ear, wait 24 hours, and check for any redness or itching.
At SAJH Wellness, our Luxe Hair is a herbal hair oil made for everyday care, and Relaxiva Herbal Oil is a good fit for a calming head massage routine.
Step 2: Use the right amount
More oil is not better. For most people, a few teaspoons is enough.
- Short hair: about 1 teaspoon
- Medium hair: about 2 teaspoons
- Long or thick hair: about 3 to 4 teaspoons
If your oil comes with a spray or dropper, use it to place small amounts on your scalp instead of pouring.
Step 3: Apply it properly
- Detangle your hair gently first so the oil spreads evenly.
- Part your hair into a few sections.
- Apply to the scalp with your fingertips, section by section.
- Massage for 5 to 10 minutes using slow, circular movements. Use your fingertips, not your nails.
- Smooth the rest of the oil along the lengths and ends, where hair is driest.
Step 4: How long should you leave it?
For most people, 1 to 2 hours before washing is plenty. If you prefer an overnight routine, put a clean towel on your pillow and wash your hair in the morning. If you have an oily scalp, a shorter time is usually more comfortable.
Step 5: Wash it out gently
Use a mild shampoo and lukewarm water. Apply shampoo to the scalp first and rinse well. If your hair still feels heavy, shampoo a second time. Very hot water can make hair feel drier, so try to avoid it.
How often should you oil your hair?
- Dry hair or dry scalp: 2 to 3 times a week
- Normal hair: 1 to 2 times a week
- Oily scalp: once a week, or only on the lengths and ends
Start with once or twice a week and adjust based on how your hair feels.
